1. Scope

1.1

This Standard states a health care facility's requirements for (a) plumbing installations; (b) pure water systems; (c) plumbing fixtures and fittings; and (d) hydraulic fire protection systems. Notes: (1) Users of this Standard are referred to CSA Standard CAN/CSA- Z305.1 for the design, installation, certification, and maintenance requirements of nonflammable medical gas piping systems. (2) Users of this Standard are referred to Appendix A for additional considerations with regard to plumbing installations in health care facilities.

1.2

This Standard includes minimum design, construction, and installation requirements in addition to those in the National Building Code of Canada and National Plumbing Code of Canada. It also serves as a source of information for staff responsible for facility management.

1.3

Some requirements (eg, backup water supplies, central storage systems, recirculation systems, duplex piping systems) of this Standard may be waived for smaller health care facilities such as walk-in clinics, dental offices, and physiotherapy clinics as determined by good engineering practice, consultation with the Administrator, and the jurisdiction(s) having authority.

1.4

Regarding the retrofit of existing systems, the requirements of this Standard are intended to apply when an existing health care facility is extended or subject to material alteration or repair, and when the plumbing in the building areas i s adversely affected.

1.5

In this Standard, ""shall"" indicates a mandatory requirement, ""should"" indicates a recommendation or that which is advised but not mandatory, and ""may"" indicates an advisory or optional statement. Notes accompanying clauses do not include mandatory or alternative requirements. The purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material that is not properly a part of the Standard. Notes to Figures and Tables are considered to be a part of the figure or table and are written as mandatory requirements.
